As the largest generation of youth in history, our youth play a crucial role in shaping the world’s economy and in helping to make the world a better place.
Technological advancements are introduced every millisecond, and the skills that young people need to be successful at future jobs are constantly changing. Future generations need problem solving skills, creative thinking and digital skills. Unfortunately, young innovators often lack some of the basic knowledge and skills that support the innovation process. This is why Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) have become increasingly important.
STEM education is a curriculum based on the idea of integrating the four disciplines into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications, intended to bring kids up-to-date on the skills and knowledge most relevant in today’s society.
For the Australian Government, high-quality STEM education is critical in making sure that young Australians have the skills they need to live and work in a globalised world. As part of the $1.1 billion National Innovation and Science Agenda, the Australian Government has allocated over $64 million to fund early learning and school STEM initiatives under the Inspiring all Australians in Digital Literacy and STEM measure.
Avestix Lab, in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, houses high-impact, innovative startups to bring STEM to life on a massive scale. One of our community members is Kitsunei, the creators of Kitsi. Kitsi is an electronic and completely modular platform designed as a professional prototyping tool to solve real-world problems. It’s a fun and easy way to code and build. Young people can learn how algorithms work, the relationship between hardware and software and how one is controlled by the other.
Kitsunei is party to the 4th Industrial Revolution. The massive, transformational purpose behind Kitsunei is to have the innovation centres of the future at the family home.
Kitsunei has democratised tech making — and has done so in a way that’s respectful of how children learn, and how computational thinking and logic can be most effectively taught. Kitsi drives children to question, think critically, inquire, and project-build. A tech background is not a requirement; learning happens while on the platform, and that learning can last a lifetime. The motivational confidence of Kitsunei’s catchphrase “Show them you can!” speaks to the power of the Kitsi platform.
Kitsunei and Avestix Lab have also partnered with Robotics Playground, whose goal is to create a playground filled with robotics and engineering activities — for anyone to play and interact with — to spark their creativity and passion.
Together, the teams from Kitsunei, Robotics Playground and Avestix Lab have created Kitsi Club — intended to nurture the next generation of innovators as they explore the limitless possibilities presented by the Internet of Things.
Where the school is the evangelistic beginning, Kitsi Clubs are the community meeting places and innovation centres, where children and their parents can explore possibilities and engage in shared maker experiences.
Kitsi Club organises fun and engaging problem solving sessions using Kitsi Blocks. Team leader, Wilson Kong from Robotics Playground, guides our young participants through how to use the Kitsi Blocks, and the engineering process of problem solving and prototyping.
The first Kitsi Club event, which took place on July 5 at Avestix Lab, was a roaring success. The goal was to create a product by the end of the session that would help in preventing and alerting the community about bush fires. This fun and engaging accelerated problem-solving and creating session involved using Kitsi blocks, with Robotics Playground guiding the students through the use of the blocks, and the engineering process of problem solving and prototyping.
